EDAPHOS
“Edaphos” is the lower apartment of the duplex design project “Seriphos Estate”, just steps away from the beach of Agios Ioannis in Serifos. As the lower-built sibling of Kelyphos (the upper apartment of Seriphos), Edaphos embodies the balance of mental elevation and the freedom exuded by Kelyphos, while simultaneously highlighting the value of grounding and protection; of warmth and familiarity. This purpose was served by a plethora of design elements, such as the wallpaper that starts from the ground and fades into the ceiling, ’embracing’ the space, the ceiling’s overlay with colored natural plaster which—despite the room’s grand height—gives the sensation that you are underground, the rich textures of the space such as the foundation of the sofa, its warm, deep colors, or its organic shapes, such as the chairs and the table.
Upon entering the house, we first encounter the living room area and, diagonally opposite of such, the kitchen, which is always sunlit due to its direct access to the courtyard. All visible kitchen equipment (such as the cooker hood or the faucet) is carefully selected to fully integrate into the color palette of the interior design. Given that the space is relatively small and undivided, said color uniformity was necessary to keep it visually “clean” and serene.
Again, to make the best use of the small size of the kitchen, we chose a tall, wooden table for it, which can be used for a wide range of uses; from a quick cup of morning coffee, to an indulgent home-cooked meal made of fresh vegetables from the garden, or even work/studying.
The main bedroom also has direct access to the courtyard. Its comfortable bed, which is dressed with fresh linen sheets, is set on a platform. Due to its low and solid position, it becomes a defining element of the overall earthy design concept.
The mirror in the main bathroom mimics the eye of Polyphemus, the well-known Homeric Cyclops. According to urban legends, Odysseus and his companions fought Polyphemus in the southwestern part of the island.
The sofas, pillows, and poufs in the courtyard feature modern, fresh, and lively patterns, adjectives that aptly convey the owner’s personality.
On the same level as the courtyard there is the main outdoor kitchen, specially designed for the owner’s large gatherings. The kitchen serves as a communal space for the both of the Seriphos Estate apartments (Kelyphos and Edaphos), with the aim of bringing all guests together. As it has both sunny and shaded areas, it can cater to a variety of tastes and uses. Additionally, its floor is covered with a large rug, giving it a “barefoot” luxury vibe. A similar effect is created by the large central wooden table, surrounded by benches that can be replaced with poufs.
