Representing a modern and upgraded lifestyle, located on a quiet street in a sophisticated neighbourhood in the Voula area, the concept of the ‘New Era’ residences targets a fresh, youthful audience. Therefore, we wanted to “break” the conventional square architecture of the building by choosing both an unusual color palette for its exterior and a distinctive geometric pattern for the balcony ceilings.
On the ground floor, we utilized the large outdoor area. A combination of lush tropical plants, spherical elements, patterns, and plenty of imagination inspired the creation of an irregular space that reflects a youthful and imaginative spirit.
For the interior space of the residence, the goal was for it to inspire warmth, grounding, and creativity. The first two characteristics (warmth and grounding) are covered by the prevailing earthy tones, reminding the owners of their direct connection with the ground below. The third characteristic (creativity) is found in the surreal elements of the space, such as the dreamy pattern of the sofa or the hanging light fixture reminiscent of a swing.
A key feature of the house is its open layout. Upon entering one room, the next one comes into view—either directly or indirectly—enhancing a desire to explore further.
Passing by the kitchen, we reach the brightest spot in the house during the morning hours: the dining room. The summer sun streams in, making it the ideal place for sunny Sunday mornings. Here, we gain direct access to the back garden, while nature extends into the interior space through the atmospheric forest landscape of the wallpaper.
A space that would have simply been a corridor between rooms was utilized and transformed into an independent area, adorned with books, seating, and a table for chess.
The design approach for the rooms was to inspire a sense of freedom, resembling spaces for open relaxation and contemplation rather than a conventional bedroom. Since the bed is the most integral feature of any “conventional” bedroom, we decided that breaking the conventional element lies in the design and placement of the bed. For this reason, the bed takes the form of a daybed and is positioned diagonally, under the large windows. Another unique feature is the mirrors, through which light and various geometries create new compositions, generating a play of reflections in the space.
The basement of the residence lacks natural light, which presented a creative challenge for us. Among the many potential uses and services it could support, we deemed it ideal to transform it into a home cinema and entertainment space. Thus, a feature previously considered a drawback—the lack of light—was turned into an advantage.
We aimed for the descent from the ground floor to the basement to transport the owners “to another universe.” This was achieved with the help of descriptive wallpaper and the arrangement of the sofas, which encourages the owners’ complete immersion in the space while watching movies.
